So how does it light up?
There is nothing behind the wall and nothing running down it. The light comes from a battery LED bulb that screws into the socket. Here is the whole thing in cross section, with the bulb in and out.

This pair mounts flat to the wall with an adhesive pad in about five minutes, or with the screws in the box if you would rather it never move. Nothing runs behind the wall and nothing runs down it.
