This is the fun part. The shade colour and the base colour are chosen separately, so you build your own pairing — a green shade on a black base, a pink shade on a yellow base, a frosted green on beige. Six shades and six bases make 36 combinations in all, so you can go quietly tonal or boldly clashing.

It uses a standard E26 or E27 socket, so you pick the bulb and, with it, the exact tone and brightness you want — the bulb isn't included, so you're not stuck with someone else's choice. It hangs on an adjustable cord you shorten to the right height, and it wires into a standard circuit.

The cord adjusts up to about 150 cm (59 in), and shortens so you can hang it higher for a taller ceiling.

A good clearance from the surface up to the bottom of the shade over a kitchen island or dining table, so it lights the surface without blocking sightlines across it.
